A favorite childhood pastime and a current source of enjoyment for many is the opportunity to curl up in a chair with the Sunday comics or monthly edition of comic books packed with adventure.
When it comes to the action-packed pages of superheroes who save the world from certain disasters, most of us are familiar with several of them. Superman, Captain America, and Spiderman are great at thwarting the evil plans of those who want to take over the world. Additionally, we have the teenage mutant ninja turtles who fight crime while trying to remain hidden from society.
Most of us are also familiar with Popeye, who is earthly, but gains unstoppable strength when he eats his spinach.
We may enjoy made-up tales of superheroes that have supernatural strength, seeing them in action, and fighting for good. Even though the stories of flying with capes, climbing walls, and getting bulging muscles from one can of spinach are fiction, there are true superheroes that walk among us, and they deserve to be honored.
A father plays a special role in the lives of his family. His drive to provide for the needs of his children and wife is because of his great love for those who call him husband and father. He is there to share the good and the bad with a desire to lessen problems and rejoice in victories.
Unfortunately, not everyone can say that their own fathers were this way, feeling pain on the day that so many others enjoy. Abandonment, rejection, and other issues have robbed so many of feeling the love of a father like they should. Fallen man fails his family so often because of his own issues. Sadly, children take those issues upon themselves, not understanding their own worth when they’ve only experienced rejection.
In situations where Father’s Day is painful for many, God doesn’t want any child, young or old to feel left out. Even when an earthly father is absent, our heavenly Father is there. His attributes of love, care, protection, and provision are waiting for us to embrace them. Psalm 103:13 tells us that, “As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him.”
It isn’t just a cliché that Jesus loves us. It’s a fact the Lord wants every living person to know.
As we celebrate fathers for all that they’ve poured into our lives, let us also remember to thank our heavenly Father for all He is to us.
