Democratic Texas state Rep. James Talarico recounted in an unearthed interview from 2023 how his liberal mainline Presbyterian church influenced his political worldview, including its willingness to house an illegal immigrant family that was facing deportation by federal law enforcement.

Speaking in a clip from a June 2023 episode of Texas Impact’s “Weekly Witness” podcast that was circulated last week by the Republican National Committee’s “RNC Research” X account, Talarico praised the influence of the Rev. Jim Rigby, his longtime pastor at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) near Austin, Texas.

“My faith is why I’m in politics,” Talarico said in response to a question asking him how his faith guides his policy principles. He touted Rigby’s church, which the Democratic U.S. Senate nominee has attended since childhood, by noting that it taught him “the idea that Christianity is just another word for causing trouble.”
