Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced he is running for the 2024 Republican nomination, saying he believes the “world has not yet seen the true glory of what this nation can be.”

“In order to make America great and glorious again. I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,” Trump told supporters.

Repeating a message from his 2016 presidential campaign, Trump said he is “a voice” for the people.

“The Washington establishment wants to silence us, but we will not let them do that,” he said. “What we have built together over the past six years is the greatest movement in history because it is not about politics. It’s about our love for this great country, America, and we’re not going to let it fail.

“I am running because I believe the world has not yet seen the true glory of what this nation can be,” Trump added. “We have not reached that pinnacle, believe it or not. In fact, we can go very far. We’re going to have to go far first. We have to get out of this ditch. And once we’re out, you’ll see things that nobody imagined for any country. It’s called the United States of America. And it’s an incredible place.”

In the days leading up to his announcement, Trump had criticized Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and had even mocked his last name.

DeSantis responded on Tuesday after a reporter asked him about Trump’s “less-than-flattering” comments. DeSantis beat his Democratic rival on Election Day by nearly 20 points, while multiple Trump-backed candidates lost key elections.

“One of the things I’ve learned in this job is when you’re doing, when you’re leading, when you’re getting things done, you take incoming fire, that’s just the nature of it,” the Florida governor said. “… I would just tell people to go check out the scoreboard from last Tuesday night [Election Night]. The fact of the matter is it was the greatest Republican victory in the history of the state of Florida.”
