A Republican member of Congress from Illinois introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday to mandate that the national motto acknowledging God be displayed in every federal building.

Rep. Mary Miller, R-Ill., introduced the “In God We Trust Act,” which would require the administrator of the General Services Administration (GSA) to inscribe or prominently display the national motto, “In God We Trust,” in every public building.

“For nearly 70 years, our national motto, ‘In God We Trust,’ has served as a declaration of faith that has guided our nation,” Miller told The Christian Post.

“As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, I’m proud to introduce the House companion to Senator Hawley’s ‘In God We Trust Act’ to permanently display our national motto in every federal building across this country. We will never apologize for being one nation that places its trust in Almighty God.”

First appearing on U.S. coins in 1864 during the Civil War to acknowledge God and boost Union morale, the phrase formally replaced “E Pluribus Unum” as the de facto national motto in 1956 by a unanimous congressional resolution signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The adoption of the motto came as the U.S. was increasingly contrasting its worldview with the atheist communism of the Soviet Union during the Cold War, according to scholars.

Miller, a Sunday school teacher and homeschool mother who was born again in the 1980s, has been outspoken about her Christian faith and the role she believes Christianity has played in U.S. history. She helped to found the Congressional Family Caucus in 2023, with the goal of passing policies that push back against the Left’s “deliberate attack on the nuclear family.”

Miller’s bill comes ahead of Rededicate 250: A National Jubilee of Prayer, Praise & Thanksgiving on the National Mall on Sunday, which is slated to feature Scripture, testimony, prayer and a formal “rededication of our country as One Nation to God.”

The proposed legislation is the House companion bill to one introduced in the U.S. Senate last September by Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., days after President Donald Trump launched the “America Prays” program encouraging weekly prayer.

Like Miller, Hawley has been a vocal advocate for acknowledging the role Christian faith plays in preserving both personal and national integrity.

During a lecture last month at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, Hawley warned a group of seminary students that the U.S. finds itself in a “spiritual crisis” caused by widespread rejection of its historic Christian faith, contending that the country “was founded on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

During a recent interview with Al Mohler, Hawley discerned that much of the spiritual fallout from rejecting Christianity has fallen on young American men, and that Christians face an opportunity and a responsibility to disciple them back to faithfulness amid their profound struggles.
